You may have noticed a flurry of activity as the huge public art installation on the RiverWalk continues to bring bright aspects of the city into color!
About the project
For starters, the public art installation on the Columbus side of the RiverWalk is a creative way to enhance the natural beauty of the 22-mile RiverWalk. It’s part of the nonprofit Dragonfly Trails’ 33-mile multi-use greenways that offer connectivity and encourage outdoor recreation.
The city’s biggest public art installation will feature the work and combined creativity of a team of seven local artists. Local artists selected to contribute to the more than 6,000-square-foot mural include Mike Jones, Raven Henderson, Vinh Huynh, Joseph Melancon, Harrison Mills and Samantha Yoo.
The massive mural’s design incorporates both natural and manmade elements, unique to Columbus. In the end, visitors will be able to spot more than 20 different animals, shapes and other items. A few examples of what to keep your eyes out for include shoal lilies, dragonflies, blue herons, turtles, riverboats and even a freestyle kayaker!
More about the public art installation
The exciting public art installation on the RiverWalk is being privately funded through the generosity of the Community Foundation of the Chattahoochee Valley. While no specifics have been shared yet, a dedication ceremony for the public art installation is expected to take place sometime in August.
One good way to stay in the loop is to connect with Dragonfly Trails on Facebook.
Location
The RiverWalk public art installation will stretch across the three-tiered wall in front of the Synovus Centre, located at 111 Bay Ave., upon completion. More specifically, the massive mural sits between two popular attractions—Waveshaper Island and Woodruff Park.
