In the News: Renovations to The Columbus Museum

renovations to The Columbus Museum

A series of major renovations to The Columbus Museum will officially begin on Tuesday, November 1st! As of October 25th, the museum even has a “new” temporary home.

Reimagining The Columbus Museum

Renovations to The Columbus Museum intend to make the experience more inviting and interactive. There will be a public courtyard, a spacious lobby, a new children’s gallery, a new children’s garden, a new café, gift shop and more.

The last time The Columbus Museum underwent renovations was in 1989. The goal of “Reimaging The Columbus Museum” is to reconnect and engage visitors of all ages with American art, local history and cultural experiences.

You can be a part of the museum’s reimaging by making a donation to the capital campaign. So far, the campaign has raised more than $20 million.

Plus, thanks to a partnership with the Muscogee County School District, the museum also received Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax funds. These funds will be used to help with infrastructure upgrades, additional collections storage, and collections upkeep.

The Museum’s temporary home

While renovations to The Columbus Museum are happening, a few key pieces of the museum will be moving next door to 1327 Wynnton Road.

This includes the Museum Gift Shop, programs, events and certain elements from the permanent collection. The museum’s regular business hours will still apply.

That means visitors are welcome to stop by Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Thursday, the museum is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday hours are from 1 to 5 p.m.

As of now, renovations to The Columbus Museum are expected to take about a year and a half. In the meantime, connect with the museum on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
