Local Spotlight: The Springer Opera House

The Springer Opera House

It’s almost October! Why not christen the scariest month of the year with some ghost stories? Read on to learn about local lore—and the possible hauntings at The Springer Opera House, located in our neighboring Columbus, GA.

About The Springer Opera House

Ever since Joseph Springer opened The Springer Opera House in 1871, the building has offered a hub for art and culture. It grew even more influential in 1971, with a remodel bringing the seat total to 1,000.

Though the arrival of films nearly stopped the landmark in its tracks, even turning it into a movie house, it eventually recovered. Decades later, volunteers banded together to protect this beautiful building. With time, hard work, and $11.5 million dollars, the Opera House opened again in 2013.

Now, you can visit the historic theatre for live performances, musicals and more. Though, of course, you may want to learn about its potential hauntings first!

About Edwin Booth

Before we get into the ghost stories, let’s take a moment to talk about one of the most interesting series of events in America: the tale of Edwin Booth.

For much of his lifetime, Edwin Booth was the most famous brother in a family filled with respected actors. As a well-known performer who traveled the country, he became a household name. Many clamored to watch him in roles like Brutus, Richard III, and Hamlet. He even had a very influential brush with the Lincoln family, saving the life of the president’s son, Robert.

We know—record scratch! While his brother, John Wilkes Booth, will always be remembered for his horrible part in American history—and the Lincoln family’s lives—Edwin also played a big part in the saga too. Back in 1864 or 1865, he realized that a young man had fallen onto a train platform. Knowing that the man was in mortal danger, Edwin risked his life to save him.

How do we know this? Robert told the story himself!

A possible haunting

Edwin Booth shared the stage with his family quite often, even once taking over his father’s role as Richard III. However, after his infamous brother assassinated President Lincoln, Edwin took a retreat from the stage. While he eventually returned, he was irrevocably changed.

Here’s where the ghost part comes in. Edwin gave an iconic performance at The Springer Opera House. There, he was met with cheers, applause, and appreciation—something he sorely missed.

Local rumors and sightings claim that once he passed, his spirit returned to a place he was once received so warmly. Some folks even say they’ve seen him floating around there!

Other ghosts

The Springer Theatre may also play host to other ghosts. People have claimed to see two other spirits there. The first is a little girl, while the second is another man. So, if the landmark does have some spectral residents, at least they have company!
